On 9 July 869 a great earthquake occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan. The seismic event had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.9-9.0.
The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of two planetary conjunctions and a lunar conjunction on 7 July 869.
Four planetary conjunctions occurred from 4 to 7 July 869, three of which formed due to a near quadruple conjunction with the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars. A convergence of two planetary conjunctions occurred within 6 hours on 7 July, one of which was Sun-Venus-Mars (compare 2004). These conjunctions converged with a lunar conjunction, also involving Mars (compare 1960, 1964).
