On 10 May 1877 a great earthquake occurred at Iquique, Chile. The seismic event occurred at 02:16 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.9.
Critical planetary geometry occurred on 7-8 May, in particular the Mercury-Venus-Neptune alignment, which often precedes major to great earthquakes. The alignment coincided with a lunar peak that reached index 10, partially due to the Moon's alignment with Saturn.
