On 15 June 1896 a mega-thrust earthquake occurred off the east coast of Honshu, Japan at a depth of 30 km. The seismic event occurred at 10:32 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.5.
Critical planetary from 8 to 10 June 1896 coincided with critical lunar geometry and was followed by a lunar peak on 11 June. A convergence of critical planetary geometry occurred on 14-15 June involving four alignments, most critical of which was Mercury-Venus-Neptune. It coincided with a high lunar peak late on 14 and early 15 June. The earthquake occurred several hours later.
