Mw 8.1 Central Mongolia

On 4 December 1957 a great earthquake occurred in Central Mongolia at a depth of 20 km. The seismic event occurred at 03:37:53 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.1.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is the planetary conjunction Venus-Mars-Neptune on 2 December 1957, followed by lunar conjunctions with Jupiter and Neptune on 3-4 December.

From 28 November to 2 December 1957 three planetary conjunctions occurred whereby the celestial bodies involved (Venus, Sun, Mars and Neptune) formed a near quadruple conjunction on 1-2 December. On 28 November 1957 a critical planetary conjunction Venus-Sun-Mars occurred, which was a primary trigger of a major earthquake in Bolivia late on 29 December. Two more critical planetary conjunctions Venus-Sun-Neptune and Venus-Mars-Neptune occurred on 30 November and 2 December respectively. At the next lunar peak on 3 December a strong earthquake occurred at the Andreanof Islands, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, followed a day later by the great earthquake in Central Mongolia.
