Mw 6.7 Bouvet Island Region

On 10 October 2017 a strong earthquake occurred in the Bouvet Island Region at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 18:53:33 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7.

After the high lunar peaks that resulted in a strong earthquake at the Rat Islands on 8 October, a lunar peak on the 9th that followed on the Mercury-Sun-Earth alignment, resulted in additional strong seismic activity. Early on the 10th a Mw 6.3 earthquake occurred in Tarapaca, Chile, followed by the earthquake in the Bouvet Island Region.
